    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy combines therapeutic conversation with hypnosis to help you make positive changes in the way you think, feel and respond. It can help you access your own strengths and resources, develop new perspectives and work towards meaningful change.

Will I be in control during hypnotherapy?

Yes. You remain in control throughout the session. Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state of focused attention and relaxation, and you cannot be made to do anything against your wishes or values.

    What does hypnosis feel like?

Everyone experiences hypnosis differently. You may feel deeply relaxed, calm and focused, while remaining aware of what is happening around you. Some people describe it as similar to being absorbed in a book, film or daydream.

    Can anyone be hypnotised?

Most people can experience hypnosis, although the experience varies from person to person. You do not need to have a particularly vivid imagination or be able to “switch off” your thoughts. The process is collaborative, and you remain an active participant throughout.

Will I remember what happens during hypnosis?

Yes. You remain aware during the session and will usually remember what has taken place. Hypnosis is not the same as being unconscious or asleep.

Can hypnotherapy make me do something I don't want to do?

No. Hypnotherapy cannot make you act against your values or wishes. You remain in control and can choose how you respond throughout the session.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on you, what you would like to work on and the changes you want to make. Some people find that a small number of sessions is helpful, while others benefit from longer-term support. We will discuss this together and review your progress as we go.

What happens in the first session?

Your first session is an opportunity to talk about what has brought you to hypnotherapy, what you would like to change and what you hope to achieve. We will discuss your needs, answer any questions you have and agree how we might work together. You will never be pressured into doing anything you are not comfortable with.

Do I need to talk about everything that has happened to me?

No. You choose what you feel comfortable sharing. Therapy is a collaborative process, and we can work at a pace that feels right for you.

Is hypnotherapy the same as therapy or counselling?

No. Although hypnotherapy can involve therapeutic conversation, it is distinct from counselling and psychotherapy. Depending on your needs, therapeutic approaches can sometimes complement one another. We will discuss what is most appropriate for you.

    Do you use treatment plans?

Yes. Your sessions will be guided by what you would like to achieve. We will work collaboratively to identify your goals and develop an approach that is appropriate for you, reviewing your progress throughout.

    Is hypnotherapy suitable for everyone?

Hypnotherapy is not appropriate for everyone or every situation. Your circumstances will be discussed during your initial consultation so that we can consider whether hypnotherapy is a suitable approach for you. Where appropriate, I may recommend that you seek support from another healthcare or therapeutic professional.

    Can I have hypnotherapy online?

Yes, hypnotherapy can be offered online as well as in person, where appropriate. We can discuss which option would work best for you.How do I book an appointment? You can get in touch to arrange a free, no-obligation discovery call. This gives us an opportunity to briefly discuss what you are looking for, answer any initial questions and decide whether working together feels right for you.
